The first quarter of 2019 is coming to and end. How are you doing on your New Year’s resolutions? Are you in the majority or the minority?

Most people start their year with lofty goals and resolutions and yet, according to research at the University of Scranton, only 8% of those who make New Year’s Resolutions achieve their goals.

Here are seven tips to help you stay on track for the rest of the year:

Be specific.  Often people set vague goals (i.e., I want to lose weight) that cannot be monitored or measured so it’s difficult to see progress.  Without progress it’s easy to get discouraged and quit. Get specific and monitor and measure your results (i.e., how much weight you want to lose and by when).

Make your goal attainable.  It can feel daunting to go from where you are to your goal, if you don’t believe you can achieve it.  Have your goal end in mind, but create attainable benchmarks so you can stack success and build the confidence necessary to achieve your benchmarks and goal.

Know why your goal is important.  Purpose provides motivation to achieve your goal.  What makes your goal a MUST right now? Consider how you will feel as you are achieving your goal and what will this achievement mean to you and others.

Modify environment.  Your environment must support your goals.  If achieving greater financial success is your goal, it is important to surround yourself with like-minded financial people.  If you want to lose weight, you must clear your refrigerator and cabinets of unhealthy foods.

Replace the behavior.  If the goal is to stop drinking, it is important to replace the bad habit with a healthier one.  Without a replacement behavior it’s easy to continue to focus on what you don’t want (i.e., the old behavior) and feel deprived.  Focus on what you want and create new habits around the new desired behavior.

Avoid catch-up mentality.  Creating new habits is about growth and consistency over time.  It’s important to remember setbacks happen. Don’t try to “catch-up” when you miss a benchmark.  Stacking setbacks is immobilizing. Start each day fresh and take the next step toward your goal.

Create accountability.  Schedule regular sessions with a coach or accountability partner.  Be sure you have someone who will hold you to high standards to help you achieve your goal.

Be part of the minority – achieve the life you deserve in 2019!
