The widely touted theory, highlighted in a 1993 psychology paper and popularized by Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers, says that anyone can master a skill with 10,000 hours of practice.
Whether you believe this to be true or not about the exact number of hours it takes to be world class at anything, there is no question that mastery comes down to a matter of intentional practice especially in direct selling and your home based business.
Let’s look at a few scenarios where this is true.
- Carrie Underwood, started a a country sensation on American Idol and today is one of America’s Top Female Country Vocalists.
- Babe Ruth, was just a normal baseball player at one time but he became exceptional. Since 1921, he still today holds the record for the most runs (177) and total bases (457) in a single baseball season.
- Now let’s look at someone who is not famous. Let’s take a young 7 year old girl who starts gymnastics and in a few years she is able to try out for the competitive team. At that point they practice up to 12 hours a week and at each meet or competition, the young athlete becomes better and better.
- Anyone can get better at anything with deliberate practice.
There is no doubt that deliberate practice is important, from both a statistical and a theoretical perspective.
So how does this apply to you and your home based business? Well, what you focus on is where your experience expands. Over the course of 10,000 hours or however long you take to master something, you will gain focus, experience, execution, learning, development, confidence and vision.
So how do you start a journey of 10,000 hours. I would encourage putting it on your calendar in small increments of time which will do two things, keep you from becoming overwhelmed and it will keep you consistent.
I believe in you and your desire to master what it is your heart wants. Be bold and Go for it! Be a professional in your home based business.
