Most people want to know the quickest way to success.
As a professional mentor and coach, there is not a fast track to success. In fact, mastery (success) is often found in the mundane.
As I sit here and think of a few things I’d tell you about success, I’ll give you some of my top tips on how to make your goal setting efforts work best for you.
Every business professional sets goals to measure their performance to determine if their efforts are successful or not. What I see is most people set the goal but then fail to schedule a time to measure, evaluate the measurements or make small adjustments to the plan.
Why is this? Perhaps it is because we have HIGH expectations and when they are not met, we feel like we have failed in some way.
I would encourage you to think of it in a different way.
- Setting goals is good.
- Any movement towards them is an achievement.
- Even if you stay status quo, you haven’t gone backwards.
- If you do go backwards, you can catch it before it becomes something you do not want.
For example, let’s use the goal of losing weight.
- You start out knowing where you are at.
- You set a goal of where you want to be by a certain date.
- Then you go about your life and eat well for a few days.
- When someone brings you cookies or some other indulgence you love, you might think, oh this once won’t hurt me and partake.
- If you never evaluate (measure) and just keep doing this a few things will happen.
- Something else will grab your attention in life.
- You’ll weigh yourself again in the future and wonder what happened. Well you lost focus in the steps of measuring, assessing and adjusting.
Goal setting is great. Goal setting with the plan to measure, assess, adjust, celebrate and reevaluate are best.
It is okay if this has been your journey.
The goal is to progress in the direction you are seeking.
You are the master of your intentions and your actions. Remember, mastery often comes wrapped in what looks like the mundane.
You can do this!
Andrew Carnegie says, “If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy and inspires your hopes.”
