Goal Setting: Where Are You Now?

When I work with fellow Network Marketers / MLM business owners, our discussions often start with two questions: What do you want? Where do you want to a year from now?
This strategy comes from personal experience. My husband and I are partners in our network marketing company. Early on, he and I decided on what we wanted from our company; the next step was to assess where we were starting. As veteran MLM’ers know, you will want to assess where you are now. Why? Because this is the way you will know when you have reached your goals. When you get there, you will be able to see the difference from where you started.
So often people say, I want to make more money. Is $1 more money? Is that what you had in mind? Or, I want to increase my team by 20%. 20% of what? It is important distinction to have a snap shot of where you are starting so you truly have a measurement of your success. For those new to Network Marketing or MLM, it may feel little awkward to make this review, to feel as if you are starting from scratch. It is important to identify the skills that you bring to your business. Be sure you acknowledge those skills as they are now. What you will notice in three, four or maybe six months from now, is that you have developed additional skills and abilitie. You will be able to look back and celebrate all your progress and the successes you have had, and the skills you have added to your success tool belt!
Assessing where you are now will include where you are both personally and professionally. I suggest measuring your current situation on a scale of 1 to10. And, when measuring, ask yourself, what is my satisfaction with this area? Write down the number that immediately comes into your thoughts. Do not judge it or adjust it. Record it as it first comes up.
One way to measure the personal and professional areas in your life is to use a tool called the Balance Wheel or Wheel of Life. Draw a circle, divide it into pieces – like a pie or pizza – and then label each piece. Include the following areas: Fun; Community; Family and Friends; Money/Finance; Career/Work; Growth/ Learning; Health/ Fitness; Partner/Love; Environment; and Spirituality. When doing this exercise ask yourself, “what is my satisfaction level with this area of my life?” You will see where you are most satisfied and least satisfied.
Then decide which areas you want to focus on. This is a tool that you should keep and then revisit six months from now. You will be able to see the changes you have made from where you were when you started. And you’ll see more changes in another six months.
When you know where you are, and where you want to go, you can create a strategy for filling the gap and meeting your goals. In your strategy, you will want to focus on the three most important areas that will help you achieve your goals. The journey will be filled with lots of learning, variety, and contribution to yourself and the people you touch in your organization.
